Title: 5 Times Faith Almost Applied for a New Partner, But Didn't After All
Fandom: Third Watch
Summary: See title.
Rating: Gen, some het, PG-13.
Notes: Because [livejournal.com profile] leadensky asked for the 5-things meme, and she doesn’t even know the show! What a pal. This one definitely could have used a beta.

1. The first time he took Fred's side in an argument.

Sometime during their first week riding around together, he made a face while she was complaining about some asinine thing Fred did the night before. "What is it, your time of the month?" he asked, and she almost punched him in the mouth.

She kept her ire directed at her husband and kept talking. Two minutes later, Bosco interrupted again with a disparaging slam on Fred, and she thought she might keep riding with him a while longer.

2. The third time he ate her French fries.

It wasn't even that he ate the last ones, which were small and chewy and not the ones she liked anyway. It was that he squirted six packets of ketchup into the bag without telling her, and when she dug in after getting back in the car after a call, her fingers and the back of her hand came back coated in a cold, thick goo. She cursed, he shrugged, and she had dried ketchup stuck under her wedding ring for the rest of the shift.

It was only the slice of pepperoni that he sprang for at dinner that saved him that day.

3. The time he yelled at her when she was only wearing her new black bra.

He came up to her locker after their shift, still pissed that she'd let the punk in the wheelchair go with only a warning. He stalked up to her so fast she didn't have time to grab her shirt to at least hold up against her nearly-bare chest. "The kid's a damned menace and you know it," he yelled at her, his face red and the vein in his forehead just starting to protrude. "You just felt sorry for him. Are you gonna feel as sorry for the next old lady he rips off?" He was standing smack in front of her, toe to toe, and even after she yelled at him back and he backed down, she noticed his eyes never looked at anything but hers. She was a little pissed, because it was a new bra and she'd thought the black satin made her skin look creamy.

When she got home that night, Fred tried to pull the same toe-to-toe crap on her about whatever bug he had up *his* ass. But the fight only lasted a minute before the bra finally got the notice it was due. As he snapped the clasp open in that disarmingly possessive way he had, the one that had been making her knees weak since she was in high school, she realized Bosco was possibly the only guy she'd ever known who didn't look at her boobs when he talked to her.

She didn't know if that fact should make her laugh, or cry.

4. The time he didn't fight back with her after Fred's heart attack.

He just stood there, her spittle glistening against his cheek in the moonlight. He just stood there and let her scream at him, unloading years of resentment and frustration and fury all over the dark asphalt between them. He didn't tell her to shut up, he didn't try to soothe her by reminding her that she was just afraid her husband would die and she wasn't being fair, he didn't even wipe his face dry when she was done and sagging against the wall. He just gave her a small tight nod, his eyes more dead than Fred's were when he collapsed on her in the elevator.

Later that night, as she listened to her husband's shallow breathing in the semi-dark of the ICU, she wondered what it was about her that propelled her need to break the men in her life.

5. The time she killed Donald Mann in cold blood for him.

The idea of a transfer is gone almost before she has it; it would only be an empty gesture if she did it because they weren't technically partners right now, and anyway, it wouldn't destroy what they had together. Nothing would, she realizes as she watched his I.V. fluid drip slowly down the tube and disappear into the mass of bandages surrounding him. She killed a man for him. Not in defense of him. In revenge for him. It was far too late to think a piece of paper would have any effect.

The various machines beep around them, not in the least bit comforting in their steadiness. He would never have done this for her, he didn't do this for her when she was the one dying in the hospital bed, and the truth of that doesn't hurt. Bosco talks a big game, but he doesn't cross the line. He can push it and twist it until it's an unrecognizable tangled mess, but he won't cross it. It's not in him to do that.

It's in her, though. She can admit now that it always has been.

She doesn't feel nearly as badly about that as she knows she should.

Sometimes, I have my moments. *g*

I really like the french fry one - cold ketchup, uggg! and Yah! hot pizza! And the black bra one - that one hits my comrades-in-arms (platonic version) kink button and just squashes it flat.

This was kewl.

Yay! I hit a button!

I have the same comrades-in-arms (platonic version) kink button, and it's all because of these two.

Thanks, and thank you for the request!

Thank you!

I don't know how long it will last, but I'm kind of enjoying writing too. :)

Me again, once more through [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212.

This is the perfect counterpiece to the one about Bosco. You made me crave for all the episodes I haven't seen of the show.

Excellent, thank you!

If you ever can catch later seasons, you should. There's a lot that goes very wrong -- it gets really dark in later seasons, and there's a LOT of conflict between Bosco and Faith -- but in the end, they both grow and evolve so much, and in realistic ways. They end up very different from who they were in the beginning, but still very much true to themselves.

You just said the best thing you could have said to make me crave the episodes even more: believable character growth.

:::happy sigh:::

I will have to look for them at the first break I'll get between work and school.

Awww, thank you! I admit, I got swept up in nostalgic love for the two of them too.

Speaking of which, did you see my post about the TW vids I found on YouTube? They were of varying quality, as you can imagine *g*, but there was one with this exquisite song called "Article of Faith". Of course, I thought of you and your search for a good Faith song immediately. But since it's already been used in a vid -- and a pretty good vid, too, I must say -- I figured you probably wouldn't want to use that exact song.

HOWEVER, one of the singer's voices sounded very familiar, and I looked up the band online. OMG!! It's Skip Sudduth's band. It was SULLY'S VOICE! And it was lovely, too. So now I'm downloading all the Minus Ted songs they have available on their site -- if I find another that might work for a Faith vid, I'll let you know!

Oh, also, one of the contestants on Rock Star performed her original song this week, and not only was it completely awesome, it also sounded like it might work as a badass Faith vid. That one is called "What the Fuck is Ladylike" and the clean version she did on the show was "What the What is Ladylike". Hee! I'm downloading both from < a href="http://cdbaby.com/cd/stormandballs">here as we speak.

*nudge, nudge*
